I just finished watching Strangers on a Train. It was a great movie...and as a Hitchcock fan, I appreciated the amazing shots (like the one on the carousel of Bruno stomping on Guy's hands). But what really made the movie for me was Robert Walker's character, Bruno. He was a dangerously sweet villain and I found myself at times siding with him and not Guy. At the end of the movie I thought about the roller coaster Robert Walker had just taken me on and I craved more. I read his Filmography so that I may experience more of his work and then read that he had passed in 1951. So sad, and so young. He had so much promise...I am glad that he left behind a legacy in the movies he has made and in his two sons. -A new Robert Walker fan.

The first time I saw "Stranger's on a Train," watching Robert Walker's masterful performance, I thought to myself, "who is this guy?" He is fantastic. I'm so glad Hitchcock saw something in him and cast him in that film, giving him a chance to show what he had in him. Recently I saw "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" on TCM for the first time and was again moved and, being a film fan, sought out other Robert Walker performances. I also researched him and learned more about his struggle for happiness and mental health. The details of his early death are truly tragic. I have yet to see all of his films, but intend to. I love him in "Bataan" and "The Clock" and, of course, "Strangers on a Train." Robert Walker had an amazing ability to inhabit whatever character he was playing. Few actors working today (or in his lifetime) have that ability. He stepped into a character and that character lived. He was, what they now call "authentic." And we who need art so desperately are grateful for him. Rest in Peace Robert Walker.

Robert Walker was one of my favorite actors. I remember having a crush on him when I was very young. I loved his voice, his manner, his gentleness, and, of course, his great talent. I am sorry that he experienced such sadness and so early in his life. He will always be remembered through his wonderful movies. He was a sensitive soul, admired by so many people who knew him and worked with him. And that says a lot about the man.

I remember the day this wonderful actor died--I went up to our attic and cried my eyes out, I was 14 years old--had just seen Strangers on a Train that week. I love him to this day. I pray he is at peace. It's heartwarming to see so many wonderful tributes for him.

Thanks for such a wonderful website dedicated to such a fine actor as Robert Walker. I very much enjoy viewing the wonderful selections of photos and articles. Robert Walker was such a wonderful actor and gentleman on screen and off. It's wonderful seeing people of all ages enjoying his films and new people being introduced often through the movie channels and wonderful websites like this. I love all of his films, but my favorites will always be "Till the Clouds Roll By," and "The Clock." He had class, charm, warmth, and strength of character. Great acting skills and gave to this world some fine and memorable performances. God bless you Robert Walker!

I must thank you for this web site...When I want to see the finest actor of them all...I watch an old Robert Walker movie...with due respect to todays actors...they can't hold a candle...Thank goodness for film...the fine acting in "Since You Went Away" showed clearly how talented he was...I felt the stuggle for acceptance and the feeling of becoming sorta lost...again,thanks for preserving his memory...there are those of us out here that remember.

I always enjoyed Robert Walker in the movie "Since You Went Away" with Claudette Colbert, Shirley Temple and Jennifer Jones. I never really knew about his life until I recently saw the movie "The Clock" with Robert and Judy Garland and Robert Osborne on TCM mentioned how young he was when he passed away. I was interested to find out more about him and read the story of his life and that he was married to Jennifer Jones. What a sad tale to read about his untimely death. He was such a wonderful actor. Since I was born during WWII, I just love to watch movies from the 40's. They were truly special and Robert Walker contributed to those quality films.

After watching "Since You Went Away" for the 10th time, at least 10 times, I looked Robert Walker up and found this tremendous page saluting his outstanding career. I had known he had passed away at an early age but was so sad to read the circumstances of his death. Such a loss for his family. Robert Walker was a rare talent. He monopolizes the screen even in scenes with Ava Gardner or Jennifer Jones or Judy Garland. He really connected with the audience. He was an "every man" and when I watch his films today he touches me deeply. Thank you for his tribute page. I am so glad that there are so many of us that remember his talen and charisma.

Robert Walker never made a bad movie, not too tall, nor too broad, not pretty or worn, just plain handsome, black, white or Technicolor. Not troubled the way some of his peers came across, not mysterious though it seemed a part of him said "here I am, this is who I am". Yep my kind of actor. I miss him.

This is a wonderful tribute to a beautiful man and very talented actor. I first saw Robert Walker in ,\"The Clock,\" with Judy Garland, and eagerly watched and enjoyed all of his other films. I find all of his films very romantic and moving to watch , plus so very entertaining. I never tire of watching them. I\'m glad he\'s finally getting the recognition and admiration , which he so very much deserves.

Robert Walker was my favorite actor. I was barely a teenager when I fell in love with him, especially in \"Since You Went Away.\" His color foto on the cover of Photoplay (you don\'t have it on your site) hung on my wall. I devoured all the many articles about him and JJ, and their little boys. It broke my heart to see him and JJ playing young lovers in SYWA, knowing that she\'d left him for Selznick and a greater career opportunity as his wife. (You know, Selznick divorced the daughter of L. B. Mayer, most powerful man in Hollywood, to marry JJ.) Selznick was obsessed. Casting Robert Walker opposite his estranged wife in love scenes was like voyeurism. RW\'s role in that film was very touching - the young man who was such a disappointment to his grandfather.

I saw him in person at the Loew\'s State theater in NY in 1948 (they used to have stage shows between showings of first-run MGM films), with Xavier Cugat\'s Cuban orchestra and with Lena Horne. He and Lena Horne danced the rhumba to Cugat\'s music. He was a good dancer, wore his horn-rimmed glasses and looked great.

After JJ he saw Florence Pritchett (a journalist) a lot, but his life was filled with sadness just at the height of his career. \"Strangers on a Train\" showed a whole different side of his acting talent. He was not overlooked during his life, being very popular and a respected actor. I saw all his movies, loved him in everything even when mis-cast, and cried when I saw the story about his death on the front page of the New York papers on my way to my first job.

Thank you for this wonderful site.

BTW, JJ suffered from depression herself in her middle years, and I often thought she must have suffered some feelings of guilt for the effect her leaving had on her young husband\'s short life.

Sorry to ramble on so...

What a marvelous and truly fitting tribute to Robert Walker. I\'ve always considered Walker one of the most underrated actors of the Golden Age of Hollywood, and so little has been published about him (at least to my knowledge). What a wealth of information and images are contained here! This extraordinary tribute surely does the great actor proud. BRAVO!

Sorry to cast cold water on a previous fan\'s ardour but the JJ website message board seems to cast doubt that it is THE JJ (and I agree) and that another contemporary actress who uses the name of \"Jennifer Jones\" will be appearing in \"The Last New Yorker\" billed for release in 2006.I know that Imdb.com has this listed under JJs filmography but when it is released it will prove if this is a mistake. If so I hope they correct it.You are right that she will be 87 years old this year (born 2nd March 1919) but she has not made a feature film since \"The Towering Inferno\"(1974)and as far as I know has long since retired from making movies

I am a devoted fan of the work of Jennifer Jones having collected all 24 of the feature films she made (between 1939-1974), tribute speeches, personal appearances, the A&E 2001 biography etc.I\'ve even managed to obtain her on video in the 1998 and 2003 past Oscar winners(1943) tableau (part of the Academy Awards presentation held every 5 years) through the kind help and services of her tribute web site creator.Through my interest in her work I have become a keen collector of her ex-husband, the late actor Robert Walker. One of his films the comedy \"See Here Private Hargrove\"(1943) has to my knowledge never been seen on UK tv networks (even the UK TCM version on Sky BSB digital network) but I was delighted recently to make contact with an American dealer who was able to sell me a copy of this film on DVD (they are more enlightened in America about these things). In my collection I noticed that curiously he had been cast as a corporal in three films: \"Since You Went Away (1944),\"The Clock\" (1945)and briefly for one day \"See Here Private Hargrove (1943) before he got demoted back to private!!.
Us fans have to really dig out these slightly obscure old films since in the main they are not commercially available through the usual dealer network as they are deemed not commercially viable due to lack of public demand.

That\'s all those dealers know.

Hi, Darilyn!!! Yes, I know where Robert Walker\'s grave is, e-mail me. It is quite touching to see his simple gravestone right between his mother and father\'s graves. I am doing research on the many early stage and film stars from Utah for my next book and fell in love with quite a few locals who became film legends. One of these was Robert Walker. A great talent, tragically lost too soon. He probably was just emerging as a great character actor from his years as a leading man. Ten years ago all I could find about him was the one book by Beverly Linet entitled \"Star-Crossed\" and very little on the web. Now, there is this absolutely wonderful and very thorough website which honors his memory so tastefully and as accurately as possible. Thanks so much for making more people aware of a man who had the depth for \"dark\" portrayals as well as \"light\" ones. Probably what draws people to this man, long since gone,is not only his personal struggles but his tragic love story. No one can fault either one of these two people, who both dealt with a lot of tragedy and fame in their lives while they were still so young. They both made mistakes like we all do when young. I say, it\'s about time...about time that Robert Walker\'s genius be celebrated, remembered and honored!

Hi Eileen. Yes, I think it had everything to do with JJ\'s ambition and ruthless self-obsession. And if there are any psychologists here, I would love to hear a discussion on JJ. What characteristics did she have that caused two men to be obsessed with her? Women apparently saw right through her. Her daughter was quoted as saying, \"Mother said all the right things but I never felt she really believed them.\"

This is so wonderful -- so many people remember Robert Walker. I thought I was the only one! I saw many of his films first on the family\'s B&W TV in the 1960s. I was enchanted by \"One Touch of Venus\" and then most affected by the moving \"Since You Went Away\". I also loved him in \"See Here, Private Hargrove\". I was very saddened to learn here that he was dead at 33. What a tragedy. And for Jennifer Jones, I don\'t get it. I met David O.S. years ago. Very charming, but still...does anyone else think it had to do with her ambition & career? Anyway, thanks so much for this excellent and deserving tribute to a talented and deep actor. Ah, Bruno!

What a wonderful tribute! I have been a fan since I was a little girl. When I watched his movies, my mother would fill me in on all the details of RW\'s life and movie career. Its so nice to see that your tribute has honored someone so special. Thank you for doing such a wonderful and tasteful job. AM

Just wanted to thank you for this site. It is a beautiful tribute to a wonderful actor and father, and I am sure that Bob Walker himself would be honored to see it!

I live 20 miles north of Ogden, Utah, and stopped by the cemetery to look for Bob\'s grave. Didn\'t find it, yet, but I will go back and look some more. You wouldn\'t happen to know what section of the cemetery it is in, would you?

Thanks again!

I grew up watching over and over again the movie \"Her Highness and the Bellboy\" -- really terrific movie, and that\'s when I fell in love with Robert Walker. I\'ve seen two more of his movies over the past two nights and decided it was time to find out exactly what happened to this great actor. This is a wonderful website, a nice tribute to a Robert Walker. Thank you.

I am a fan of Robert Walker & until today I never knew who was. Last night I watched a movie with Claudette Colbert,
called \"Since You Went Away\" 1944. To-
night I watched movie \"The Clock\" 1945
with Judy Garland. I said that\'s Robert Walker. I looked in an Almanac. I found he passed away in 1951 at 30 or 31 years of age. Next on Google I found this site. After reading a lot of entries by others I decided to sent in this. I will never wonder who he was again. I own a copy of a Star Treks. Now at 66 i\'m glad
he isn\'t a stranger. He was a great actor and person.

Thanks for this awsome Site. I must confess that Ive shortly seen Robert Walker the first time in my life by watching Hitchcocks \"Strangers On A Train\" - and until now I did not even know Robert Walker at all. I cant tell what an astonishing discovery this was. An ingenius actor like this. Unbelievable intense in his expression. This required a little investigation on the internet, to find out what ive missed until now. So, thanks again for the Site and best regards from Berlin, Germany.

By coincidenc I\'ve just watched Mr Walker\'s son in star Trek, too - finding this site after watching what was a very powerful performance then reading about Mr Walker\'s troubled life made the performance in the show seem incredibly poignant, almost painful (the character was young and terrified of rejection). It was a very good performance indeed.

I grew up hearing stories about Robert Walker, all the movies he was in and his tragic death because he was my mother\'s uncle. My grandfather, Wayne Walker, was his brother. I was fascinated by the account of his joys and sorrows, actually more like agonies and ecstacies in the book \"Star Crossed Lovers\", about he and Jennifer Jones. I felt a great deal of sympathy for him. I think he suffered alot, having been raised quite harshly by his mother, being a very sensitive boy (and man) and struggling as he did with depression. I wish the medications to treat mood disorders were as advanced as they are now and that he\'d been able to get better help medically and with therapy. And I really wish I knew why Jennifer left him for that other guy, I don\'t get that AT ALL. I hope Robert Jr. and Michael are HAPPY and well.

Has anyone brought the new 2-disc set of \'Strangers on a Train\', which has lots of extras on it including a \'Making of\' documentary which I understand features Robert Walker\'s son talking about the making of the film (don\'t know which son).

Sounds like an excellent DVD to get. If anyone has brought it yet, what did they think of the extras?

I always wished someone would dedicate a website to him as I feel he\'s been unfairly neglected over the years. This tribute website is done with some care, dedication & love - thank you so much.

My three favourite RW films are:-

1)Strangers on a train
2)The Clock
3)One Touch of Venus

What are other fans?

Please keep up the great work.

Kind Regards

I remember when Robert Walker and his wife Jennifer Jones first appeared in the movie magazines. They were so pretty and so much in love with each other and each became a star in their own right. Then Hollywood ruined them or rather they let Hollywood into their lives and that ruined their lives.
So very young. So very talented...

Was it worth it?

After some research I discovered that RW had filmed \"Her Highness and the Bellboy\" (1945) with Hedy Lamarr. This film cannot be obtained here in the UK and only in America if you know a rare video dealer.I am interested in RW by default through his early marriage to Jennifer Jones to whom I\'m a big fan.

Now I like most of RW\'s work for its\' own sake and this title fascinated me because it co-starred the very beautiful, glamourous and sexy Hedy Lamarr. She absolutely oozes sex appeal in this film.It is so thrilling to see a film never before seen on network U.K. tv or on video. It turned out to be hugely enjoyable, like a modern fairy tale which I think was the producers\' intention. There are no baddies and all the cast play sympathetic roles so you are left at the end with a wonderful \"feelgood factor\".I suspect other later films took certain segments of scenes and plotlines of this film on which to base theirs - I was thinking of \"One Touch of Venus\" (194 with RW & Ava Gardner and \"Roman Holiday\" (1960)with Audrey Hepburn & Gregory Peck.

June Allyson co-stars as RW\'s invalid girlfriend with whom of course we know with absolute certainty RW will tie the knot on the end reel but of course we like to be fooled by hisimaginative romance with Hedy.

Robert Walker was \"rediscovered\" about 1956 or 1957 when M-G-M sold their film vault to air on television. A generation was able to see him for the first time; an older age group was able to see most of the films they had missed; and another age group was able to see most of his films again within a very short time frame of less than two years on television. Only Bob\'s last two films, made when he was loaned out to Warner\'s and then Paramount, were not seen on television during the latter part of the 1950\'s. \"Strangers on a Train\" was on television by the early 1960\'s and \"My Son John\" aired about 1973 for the first time.

However, to see Bob on the screen before he developed and then had his personal problems publicized, was a rare treat.

A very sympathetic book was written on Robert Walker. The book \"Star Crossed\" was written by Beverly Linet detailing the life of Bob, Jennifer, and David.

I will never forget the noon day broadcast on KNX-CBS radio in Los Angeles letting the audience know that Robert Walker had died. What a sad, sad day.

Thank you for putting together a wonderful tribute to Bob Walker.

My interest in RW came about by default through my interest in his ex wife Jennifer Jones.I have assiduously collected everyone of her films, biographies, and many magazines and photos of her.Inevitably I read about RW and started to collect some of his best films. What is his best? I undoubtedly think that it is \"Strangers on a Train (1950).I am trying to obtain a copy of \"Her Highness and the Bellboy (1945 with Hedy Lamarr) from a private collector but this is difficult as the tv rights are held by TCM and it is never transmitted in the UK neither is the video for sale or rent either here or in the U.S.

Obviously I am sympathetic to his family for the manner of his passing and of his tragic later life.Despite my large collection of matter on RW and JJ they seemd to have a pact to conceal the real reason for their separation in 1944.Was it her affair with DOS that triggered the split or was it something else?.We will never know since one of the parties died 53 years ago and JJ keeps famously close lipped on any aspect of her personal life to the media. This is rather frustrating to film fans who want to know the truth behind the characters they study.Does any fan have any input into this question. If so please input here.

I first discovered Robert Walker when I was 12, in 1961 - and have been hooked ever since. During the 60\'s, I was looked upon as an oddity for my fondness for the movies of a lesser-known actor who had been dead over a decade, but I couldn\'t have cared less. I avidly watched all his movies (although I missed a few of the earliest ones) over and over again - from the dramas to the tragedies and the comedies. I wept over \"The Clock\"; I was touched by \"Her Highness and the Bellboy\"; I was enchanted by \"One Touch of Venus\" (\"Speak Low, When You Speak Love\" is my favourite song); I laughed over \"The Sailor Takes A Wife, (and the episode with Hume Cronyn as Mr. Potts, and his mishap with the chicken cacciatore); mostly, though, I was deliciously chilled by the charming, soft-spoken, criminally-insane Bruno Anthony in \"Strangers On A Train\". No question about it; if Robert Walker had been groomed, and superintended properly by a conscientious manager, and had had a support network in place to get him over the rough spots in his life, he doubtlessly would have emerged as one of our preeminent actors - but the cruel vagaries of fate dictated otherwise. Robert Walker was a brief, bright star that flashed across the sky, but was extinguished all too soon - and what remains is a lambent glow. And every time one of us gets the rare opportunity of seeing one those fine old movies (which apparently have been all bought up, and pulled from circulation), let us bask in that warm glow, and remember fondly the young star with the boyish grin, whom time can never touch with the cruel hand of age and debilitation; a face and a personality that remain forever crystallised within a time period when life was gentler and more conventional, people were better-dressed, and movies were family-oriented fare - no cursing, no sex and nudity, no apocalytic, pyrotechnic violence - just plain-vanilla, clean-cut, good old-fashioned fun. And, if in the cosmic scheme of things, this was all that Robert Walker was meant to do - then he certainly fulfilled his task, and did his job well.

ROBERT WALKER always impressed me as a very interesting young actor--so natural and unassuming. His early roles usually had him a shy, stumbling sort of guy (those Hargrove movies) but eventually he gave stronger performances in more serious roles. I thought he was outstanding in STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, the Alfred Hitchcock thriller. What a wonderful biography is included on your website. As someone who has written an article on him for FILMS OF THE GOLDEN AGE, I appreciate the accuracy and detailed information provided in that bio by Paula.

Thinking of him sometimes, I get terribly sad. I am glad that there are others that appreciate his talent and that his films survive. I\'m glad that his birthday is a holiday this year!

Based on his filmography, I can tell that I\'ve seen Mr. Walker in films before but never knew who he was. Just like his son, whom I remember clearly from his Star Trek episode, but not by name. This week, I had TCM on and was really impressed with Roberty Senior\'s performance (as well as of others in the film) in \"Her Highness and the Bellboy\". Whenever I get impressed this way, I end up doing volumes of web seaches, and have therefore also begun learning about Jennifer Jones and eveb viewing photographs of Saint Bernedette lying \"incorrupt\" in her glass coffin to this day in Nevers, France.

However, imagine how shocked and saddened I was to learn that this lively, happy slapsticking (in this film anyway) boy, Bob Walker, had, after all his mental illness problems, been killed by a poor choice of medication, and in the hands of two physicians! As a person who, over 20 years ago, spent a lot of time in psych hospitals myself, that really hit home with me!

I will be interested to continue to research this frankly quite avoidable death, and what these blundering doctors really did. It all just seems so implausible. To me, this deadly error 53 years ago is as if it were yesterday -- that is the kind of thing I would think might happen to me. Actually -- oh my god -- it almost did this year when, after having my gall bladder remved, I spent the night at my mother\'s in case of complications, which is good, because on my own, I would never have awakened. Another \"freak\" medication problem -- this time having to do with the pain killers being more potent than they wre supposed to be!

Wow, now I get why reading about Mr. Walker\'s death hit me the way it did! I myself was barely breathing when I was found the next day!

Anyway, sorry, I digress! And I don\'t intend to be comparing myself with this talented man!

I am so glad to find this web site, and hope to learn much much more about this man, his work and his life. Thanks for putting it here. I know that Mr. Walker must appreciate this too! I do hope he has found in death the peace which seems to have escaped him in life.

Robert Walker was a super actor,I first seen him in \"Bataan\" (1943).I\'m 44 and have always wondered about his career. What a tragic waste that he died so young.I\'ve watched Strangers On a Train time & time again. He is so good in it.This is a great tribute site.
